Biak Island

Biak Island

An island fortress of WWII history, deep reefs, and waterfalls.

Welcome to Biak Island

Biak Island, sitting on the northern edge of Papua in Cenderawasih Bay, is a historical island defined by dramatic Pacific war history, unique coral caves, and incredible birdwatching.

Binsari Cave and Ocean Reefs

The island played a role in World War II, and travelers can explore Binsari Cave, a massive natural limestone cave used as a fortress. Today, the island is celebrated for its pristine, quiet diving reefs and unique orchid gardens.

Munara Wampasi Festival (Biak Cultural Festival)

Biak celebrates its unique Pacific identity during the annual Munara Wampasi Festival in July. This highly energetic festival features the traditional Apen Beyeren—a jaw-dropping ritual where local cultural elders walk barefoot across red-hot volcanic stones. The festival also features traditional outrigger sailing parades, Papuan war dances, and the Snap Mor—a highly unique, communal low-tide fish spear-hunting event.
