Kota Kinabalu

A thriving coastal capital overlooking coral islands and Mount Kinabalu.

Welcome to Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu, the vibrant capital of Sabah, is a bustling coastal city where modern lifestyle meets wild nature. Flanked by the towering granite peaks of Mount Kinabalu on one side and the tropical islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park on the other, it offers travelers an exciting mix of outdoor adventure and coastal relaxation.

Island Hopping & Waterfront Sunsets

A short boat ride from the city pier leads to a cluster of tropical islands perfect for snorkeling, sandy beach picnics, and coral zip-lining. In the evening, the city’s waterfront market comes alive with the smoky aroma of fresh charcoal-grilled fish, offering front-row seats to the city’s legendary orange and gold sunsets.

Tadau Kaamatan (Sabah Harvest Festival)

In May, the entire region celebrates Tadau Kaamatan, the ancient harvest festival of the indigenous Kadazan-Dusun communities. The cultural headquarters near the city hosts massive celebrations featuring traditional drum performances, Sumazau dancing (where dancers mimic birds in flight), and the tasting of freshly brewed Lihing (traditional rice wine). The festival culminates in the crowning of the Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen), honoring the spirit of the rice harvest.
