Wamena
The high-altitude gateway to the fascinating Dani tribes of Baliem Valley.
Welcome to Wamena
Wamena is the bustling highland town located deep inside the spectacular Baliem Valley of Papua. Surrounded by towering 4,000-meter mountain peaks, this isolated valley was cut off from the modern world until the mid-20th century.
Dani Tribal Traditions & Ancient Mummies
Wamena is the cultural home of the Dani people. Visitors can experience their traditional grass-roofed Honai houses, participate in communal earth-oven pig feasts, and see centuries-old, preserved black mummies kept sacredly in highland villages.
The Legendary Baliem Valley Cultural Festival
Every August, Wamena becomes the host of the world-famous Baliem Valley Cultural Festival. This spectacular event brings together hundreds of warriors from the Dani, Lani, and Yali tribes. Travelers can witness simulated tribal battles performed with traditional spears and bows, ancient pig-roasting ceremonies, and high-energy traditional singing and dancing competitions that echo through the highland valley.
