Wakatobi

An expansive biosphere reserve protecting unparalleled coral diversity.

Welcome to Wakatobi

Wakatobi is a remote, spectacular chain of four main islands—Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko—located in the southeastern corner of Sulawesi. Positioned within the heart of the Coral Triangle, Wakatobi is a designated UNESCO Marine Biosphere Reserve, containing over 750 species of coral and 940 species of fish, making it one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet.

Ocean Giants & Shallow Coral Gardens

The waters surrounding Wakatobi are a major migratory corridor for ocean giants, including sperm whales, pilot whales, and schools of oceanic manta rays. The shallow fringing reefs are exceptionally healthy and clear, allowing snorkelers to walk directly off the soft white sand beaches and immediately float over vast, colorful coral gardens teeming with marine life.

Festival Barata Kaledupa & Ocean Rituals

Wakatobi’s ancient maritime culture is showcased during the annual Festival Barata Kaledupa. This vibrant cultural event features sacred ocean-cleansing rituals (Karia) designed to bless local fishermen and preserve the sea’s bounty. The highlight for visitors is the grand procession of beautifully decorated wooden boats parading along the coast, accompanied by traditional dances like the Lariangi—a highly graceful, historic dance performed by young local women wearing elaborate crown-like headpieces.

Responsible Snorkeling & Reef Care

  • Eco-Buoyancy: Divers and snorkelers must practice excellent buoyancy control to avoid making contact with the fragile, slow-growing coral formations.
  • Waste Management: Help keep the islands clean by minimizing single-use plastics and ensuring all personal waste is brought back to the mainland for proper recycling.
