Banda Neira

Banda Neira

The historical epicenter of the global nutmeg trade.

Welcome to Banda Neira

Banda Neira, tucked away in the remote Banda Sea of Maluku, was once the most valuable island on Earth. As the historic global source of nutmeg and mace, it was the focal point of fierce colonial battles and international trade treaties.

Stone Forts and Volcanic Reefs

Today, the island is a peaceful living museum, dotted with grand colonial mansions, ancient Dutch forts (like Fort Belgica), and volcanic black sand beaches. Snorkeling here offers a unique experience: thriving coral reefs growing directly over volcanic lava flows from Mount Banda Api.

Festival Budaya Banda (Banda Cultural Festival)

Every October or November, Banda Neira hosts the majestic Festival Budaya Banda. This rich cultural event celebrates the island’s historic role in global history and its vibrant local heritage. The absolute highlight of the festival is the Kora-Kora War Canoe Race—massive, traditional wooden canoes paddled by up to forty local warriors who row in perfect, high-speed unison to the sound of beating drums and traditional war chants, reflecting off the volcanic waters of the bay.
