Waisai

Waisai

The eco-capital town and essential jump-off point for Raja Ampat.

Welcome to Waisai

Waisai, located on the island of Waigeo, is the capital and primary entry point to the world-famous Raja Ampat archipelago in West Papua. It is the launching pad for exploring the most biodiverse marine sanctuary on the planet.

Birds of Paradise & Limestone Karsts

Just outside the town, travelers can hike into the jungle at dawn to spot the legendary Red Bird-of-Paradise performing its courtship dances. Offshore, wooden speedboats navigate through iconic labyrinthine limestone karst islands surrounded by rich coral gardens.

The Majestic Raja Ampat Festival

Waisai hosts the annual Raja Ampat Festival in October. This world-class festival is held to promote marine conservation and celebrate Papuan culture. The event features massive Suling Tambur (bamboo flute and drum) orchestras playing traditional Papuan rhythms, vibrant costume parades inspired by sea creatures, and floating art exhibitions, offering a beautiful cultural experience for travelers.
