Ternate / Tidore

Ternate / Tidore

Twin volcanic island kingdoms rich in ancient Islamic sultanate history.

Welcome to Ternate and Tidore

Rising dramatically from the deep seas of North Maluku, the twin volcanic islands of Ternate and Tidore were once the global centers of the clove trade. They are defined by towering active volcanic peaks and rich royal histories.

Ancient Fortresses and Volcanic Coffees

The volcanic slopes are covered in ancient clove forests, some containing the oldest clove trees on Earth. The coastlines are guarded by dramatic 16th-century stone fortresses built by Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch forces trying to control the spice trade.

Legu Gam Festival (Sultanate Anniversary)

The history of Ternate is celebrated during the spectacular Legu Gam Festival, which honors the birth anniversary of the local Sultan. This grand event features traditional court dances, royal processions, and sacred rituals performed within the historic Sultan’s Palace. Travelers can witness spectacular street parades, sample volcanic clove coffees, and watch sacred war dances performed by locals wearing traditional armor.
