Pekan Bangar

Pekan Bangar

The eco-gateway to Temburong's pristine primary rainforests.

Welcome to Pekan Bangar

Pekan Bangar is the quiet, charming capital of the Temburong district—a lush, green enclave of Brunei Darussalam separated from the capital by dense river networks. Situated along the banks of the wide Temburong River, this peaceful town acts as the gateway to some of the most pristine primary tropical rainforests left on Earth. It is a sanctuary where concrete roads give way to winding rivers and ancient trees.

Winding Rivers and Canopy Adventures

The true adventure begins at the riverbank of Pekan Bangar, where travelers board traditional wooden longboats (Temuai). Skilled local boatmen navigate these narrow vessels through shallow rapids, winding deep into the heart of Ulu Temburong National Park. The crown jewel of this park is the towering Canopy Walkway—a massive steel structure suspended 50 meters above the forest floor, offering breathtaking views of the misty jungle stretching as far as the eye can see.

Temburong Eco-Adventure & Cultural Fests

The district is celebrated annually during the Temburong Nature and Adventure Festival. This action-packed event features high-speed river longboat races, whitewater rafting competitions down the Temburong River, and forest marathon trails. Alongside the sporting events, the town hosts a cultural exhibition where the indigenous Iban and Murut communities open their longhouses to the public, showcasing ancient warrior dances, traditional cooking inside bamboo, and ethnic music.

Indigenous Heritage & Forest Traditions

Temburong is rich in indigenous heritage. Visitors to Pekan Bangar can learn about ancient forest traditions, sustainable farming, and traditional weaving. The town itself is famous for local treats like Wajid Temburong, a sweet, sticky rice dessert wrapped in natural leaves, offering a delicious taste of local culinary traditions.

Environmental Guidelines for Travelers

  • Eco-Responsibility: Temburong is a strictly protected conservation area. Visitors must follow a "pack in, pack out" trash policy to ensure the wilderness remains pristine.
  • Hydration and Footwear: The jungle trek involves climbing steep wooden steps. Wear sturdy, non-slip hiking shoes and carry plenty of drinking water.
